When installing sandwich panels in commercial or industrial buildings, one of the most critical yet often overlooked aspects is fire stopping at the joints. Sandwich panels are valued for their thermal efficiency and rapid assembly, but the gaps between panels can become conduits for flame and toxic fumes if not properly sealed. Adequate fire barriers at seams ensures compliance with building codes and substantially reduces fire-related risks.

The first step is to identify the type of joint being used. Common joint types include tongue and groove, overlapping, and flat seam joints. Each requires a slightly different approach to fire stopping. Regardless of the joint type, the goal is to create a uninterrupted fire-resistant seal that curbs smoke migration.

Intumescent sealants are mandatory. These are high-performance fire-resistant sealants that expand when exposed to high temperatures, sealing voids to prevent fire spread. Choose a sealant that is certified to meet the relevant fire resistance standards such as ASTM E814 or UL 1479. Always ensure the sealant is chemically safe for the panel substrate to prevent chemical degradation over time.

In addition to sealants, rock wool fire barriers can be installed within the seam voids. These materials are noncombustible and provide an additional thermal and fire barrier. When using batts, make sure they are firmly packed to eliminate air pockets, and then coated with intumescent sealant on all exposed edges.

For کانکس ساندویچ پانل penetrations such as utilities breaching the panel assembly, use intumescent pipe sleeves or firestop wraps. These devices form an airtight seal in response to rising temperatures, maintaining the structural fire protection system. Never leave penetrations unsealed, as they allow rapid flame propagation.

It is also important to conduct routine firestop system checks. Over time, sealants can crack or shrink, and insulation can shift or degrade. Scheduled audits by licensed contractors can prevent latent fire risks from escalating. Documentation of all fire stopping materials and installation procedures should be kept on file for inspections and audits.

Finally, always follow the specifications provided by panel and sealant suppliers. Ignoring manufacturer-specific application rules can render the fire protection system ineffective. Training for installers on proper fire stopping techniques is equally critical to system performance.

Effective joint sealing goes beyond compliance. It is a practical step toward protecting lives and property. Taking the time to install these systems correctly can determine survival outcomes during a blaze.
