When your mobile tether is active you might notice that your home router stops working properly. This is often due to dual-router network clashes. These conflicts happen because both devices are trying to manage network traffic. Sometimes they end up using identical subnet ranges, which causes packet loss.

Begin troubleshooting by inspecting your LAN settings. Look at the LAN network segment your router is using. Most home routers default to 10.0.0.x. Now check the network prefix your phone is assigning when it acts as a hotspot. Many mobile carriers use default 192.168.42.x, which causes network confusion. If both devices are using the identical subnet, your devices can't tell which network they belong to, leading to unreliable latency.

Next, try disconnecting your mobile tether and see if your home router works normally. If it does, the problem is due to IP overlap. Now reconnect the tether and check if certain gadgets show limited connectivity. Sometimes your phone will assign itself the same IP as your router, causing DHCP exhaustion. You can check this by checking the IP configuration in your OS. Look for messages about IP conflicts.

Another common issue is double NAT. This occurs when your mobile tether acts as a router and your router is in router mode. This double layer can slow down performance and disable port forwarding that rely on port mapping. To fix this, you can try switching your router to access point mode. This turns your router into a wireless access point and lets your phone handle gateway responsibilities. Alternatively, you can disable your home router's Wi-Fi and connect all your devices to the mobile hotspot instead, though this may decrease signal stability.

Tweak your phone’s network sharing options. Some phones allow you to alter the gateway address. If you're using a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi band on your router, and your phone is using a conflicting frequency, signal degradation happens. Try switching your router to a less congested frequency. You can use a Wi-Fi signal mapper to see how dense your RF environment is.

Reset your router and mobile hotspot. Sometimes a temporary restart clears up cached IP assignments. After restarting, relink your devices methodically. If the problem returns only when the tether is active, you've confirmed the conflict. The best long term solution is to reconfigure the DHCP pool to avoid overlap. Try using 172.16.x.x, so it no longer overlaps with your phone's common hotspot subnet. This way, you avoid recurring IP collisions.
